Just been chatting to a neighbour who told me that the council had issued an order that cockerels were now not allowed on the allotments and had to be killed/removed, and also they could not grow rhubarb or asparagus. Is this for any particular reason? It's very difficult to imagine allotments without cockerels, but can't begin to think of allotments without rhubarb !!. Can anyone shed any light as to why this decision has been reached?

If nearby householders complain about cockerels...the council act on the complaint,theres a lot of new rules coming in for allotments...one of them is...no horses...a maximum of six rabbits...and eight hens...no restrictions on pigeons.

Sounds like there are rumbles in the allotment jungle. Good job the history of the last 10 years is on file.
Looks like a complaint containing signatures of some residents around the Girnhill allotments have started a fresh wave of rules enforcement that has also now been applied to other allotment sites. Obviously this has nothing to do with any developments and show houses.
However don’t forget this is Featherstone! Some of the complaints are false. At least one allotment holder has been accused falsely of complaining himself. After a heated discussion it soon became clear that one person was stirring the proverbial crap.
Another allotment holder is being accused of dumping rubbish with permission that has now become asbestos. He could face a £35k bill. Perhaps the Girnhill asbestos story at last is to re-open?
Meanwhile WMDC confirm and also deny that they are also fly tipping to build banks to stop travelers. Yes that’s a yes and a no?

I can understand the case of cockerels, though personally I disagree with the ban, these allotments were there long before the houses, but I cannot see any problem with someone growing rhubarb or asparagus, will it be potato's and tomato's next?

The latest development this week has to raise interest. Are you living next to a Toxic Tip?
WMDC workers in plain cloths with no special protective clothing have been on Girnhill this week shoveling and sweeping some piles of muck in to open wagons. Nothing unusual about that…………….
But most of the muck taken was dumped by a skip company employed by WMDC to build anti traveler banks. A company name on the skip wagons but the registration plates are false?
So much muck has been taken that any travelers can now get easy access on to the site.
There had to be more!
Shortly after a number of metal fences have been erected with warning signs of hazardous waste? So is the waste still there? Should un-protected workers handle this waste? Is there a problem we should all know about?
A local resident has tried to find out from WMDC and has been told that the hazardous waste can not be disclosed to the public.
Given the fact that there is asbestos everywhere you could assume anything……….
Perhaps the numbers of foreign workers in town are bringing the Chernobyl waste over as a bonus…….
What ever is going on will have to come out sooner or later. If it is asbestos there will be a lot more fences going up and allotment people locked out.

Still no council responce!

Given the potential embarrassment that will be caused by digging up a fight on the Girnhill allotments you would have thought a cautious approach would have been adopted from here on?
On one hand and low key soil samples have been extracted from one part of Girnhill Park.
On the other hand it would appear that a surveyor has visited the allotments and falsely accused a number of allotment holders of keeping cockerels. All have been served with a written 28 day eviction notice.
Up set and angry? You bet some people are.

Male fowls have been kept on allotments for 70 years and more...why are people suddenly complaining

Nothing to do with show houses being built across from the allotments for the estate to be built.
Nothing to do with the fact that WMDC own the land to be built on nor the sale of the land to the developer.

Hazardous waste signs gone yet no work has taken place?
Ironic that now most allotment holders have been given 2 to 4 weeks notice to tidy their gardens or get thrown off.
Still quite from the council?
