Post by: Forkhandles on June 01, 2013, 08:03:47 pm
What a transformation....the gardens look really nice...it will look even better when the hanging baskets are in full bloom, also good foreward thinking putting the bark chippings down for low maintenance, well done to the town council.  ;D

Going to look fab once it's complete with hanging baskets and troughs on wall. Just hope it's maintained regular and the local yobs leave it alone :)

An honest comment is oh dear what a mess!
No objections to any memorial that improves the town. If it had been placed in the next flower bed it would have enhanced what is already there a whole lot better. We now have 3 items crammed in to a small space. Not only that we now have a coal bucket ladder to climb on to the finger sign boards. How long until the signs point the wrong way, like the ones in Station Lane that have been ignored for years. How long until one day all the visitors are sent to Girnhell? It appears from the outside that someone wants to have their item in front of anything else regardless.
The 6 drunken teenagers stood in the bucket on Friday night pretending they were on a roller coaster was very funny. Hope it wasn’t them that caused the mini bus and motor bike crash at the junction that of course is perfectly safe. ::)

In answer to the getting rid of the flag pole it appears something has been going on if you read back on what you can now see of the Featherstone Town Council minutes. This is the last entry. Thought the pole went up in 2008?

“MINUTES OF AN ORDINARY MEETING OF FEATHERSTONE TOWN COUNCIL HELD IN THE COUNCIL CHAMBER, OLD TOWN HALL, FEATHERSTONE ON 13th MARCH 2013 AT 7PM.
243/13 LEADER OF THE TOWN COUNCIL’S REPORT
The Leader advised that the organisation for the Miner’s Tub installation is well under way and WMDC Streetscene has agreed to remove the large tree in the flower bed on Girnhill Lane. He was very concerned about a press article regarding Leeds Council and Otley Town flag pole which had fallen due to lack of maintenance on a pushchair injuring a child. He had advised WMDC of this especially highlight the flag pole in the flower beds were the Miner’s Tub is to be installed which had been there for 10 years but no-one knows who placed it there.”

From what I can read so far it appears that it could be an intention to demolish the War Memorial Gardens and The Flag pole at the bottom of the lane.
Is it me or has Featherstone politics gone mad? Is there a reason that the two planters in front of Bargain Booze been abandoned? Who is responsible for them?

Well after the incorrect WMDC dating on the report requested by Featherstone TC for the flagpole one can only assume the Featherstone Flag pole has about as much life in it as Lister Baths or the Girnhell Estate. Shame. :(

Looks like the tubs outside Bargain Booze are tarnished because they had a Featherstone Town Logo on them. The Town Council then was not Labour. Sad....... ::)
Looks like they are left to rot until un-safe and another front page....... ::)

Rumor and gossip, a figure of £10,000 pounds is being battered about as the cost of the coal tub at the bottom of the lane. Surely this is wrong?

The 120 year commemoration of the Featherstone MASSACRE takes place on Saturday 7th of September, when the pit tub at the bottom of Station Lane will be dedicated to the memory of the two Miners shot by the army in 1893. ALL welcome. The pit tub is an original 1890 tub and came from the mining museum. Obviously the wood has been replaced.

Please....no sarky or political comments!

Good information Kim.  ;D
No sarky intended nor political comment, but ironic you post this, now.
Did the National coal mining Museum charge £10,000.00 for the tub? Have to ask as a rate payer with increased council tax bill. Have to ask in comparison as many people are only just discovering that the Featherstone War Memorial Gardens cost them as tax payers or any payers £0.00.

Thank you for the information Forkhandles, the tub must have cost less than £999.99 then?
Is the history group the one that meets in the library with Mr Dransfield and Mr Lumb?
 ;D
