Title: Girnhill Lane Estate, Featherstone, The final battle!
Post by: yetion1 on August 09, 2012, 08:49:11 pm
Girnhill Lane Estate, Featherstone, The final battle!

It’s been a long time coming but here it is. WMDC earlier this year filled an application for compulsory purchase against the remaining residents of the Girnhill Estate Featherstone with the Secretary of State. After considering the application the Secretary of State has not automatically granted permission. Instead due to significant points a public enquiry has been called by Secretary of State. This will be funded by WMDC who will also provide a venue for the enquiry.
A date and venue has now been set. The Final battle will take place at the Old Court Rooms at Wakefield Town Hall on 16th and 17th of October…………………………………………………..

So why the dots? You didn’t think WMDC would give in did you? Why pay the remaining residents off with an honest payment instead of costing us the tax payers far more for this one legal event that definitely will not save a few quid?

Shortly what can be found publicly will be posted. There is a copy of the “statement of case” available in Featherstone library now. You will have to be quick as the probability is an Irishman will be reading it for weeks if it hasn’t already gone missing.

If you thought it had got juicy it’s just about to get juicier especially as it’s now Fev Folk against Fev Labour and common sence.

one of those houses is the one I was brought up in.
Cardboard city was a very different place then.
Ronnie Hobson's family lived next door to us: lovely guy. His dad was on the Rovers' committee.

whenever I visit the place to take photographs it seems haunted.

You shouldnt expect anything other than the wool being pulled over the publics eyes.

WMDC look like they will be trying to use Adrew Wallhead to sort out the mess and save as much council embaresment as possible. No surprise that WMDC get letters printed;

(http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg99/yetion1/PCLetter230812.jpg)

A single responce has been printed;

(http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg99/yetion1/PCletter300812.jpg)

There were many letters of complaint sent;

WMDC VS Featherstone People Part 2

In reply to WMDC Andrew Wallheads letter last week perhaps the public should know the recorded factual truth and not the un-factual fairytale that was portrayed.
The final battle to gain a fair deal for the remaining residents has begun. WMDC began the year by attempting to use “a highways issue” to supposedly build roads they do not have right to and on land they don’t own. Evan WMDC planning could see the possible law suit and failed the WMDC application. How much did that cost us all?
Mr Wallhead gave a glossy picture off a “full market value paid” for the remaining homes plus cash! Using only a WMDC valuation perhaps someone could explain when did a house valued at over £150K be suddenly worth £88k plus a boat load of words that equal a loan of £50K? Would you take half of your homes value as a fair deal?
Mr Wallhead forgot to mention that after considering many of the fats the Secretary of State has called a public inquiry to decide on the goings on. He also forgot to mention that at the “public inquiry” WMDC have so far banded the public from talking during the 2 day event that should run for as long as it takes. Perhaps WMDC would like to respond to the public with their excuse on this?
Unless there is a public outcry we the rate payers look destined to be spending far more in legal costs than to actually pay the “fair market prices” of these people homes.
If WMDC would like to talk there has always been is a meeting available with the residents, and the district Cllrs as long as offensive comments are not used, again!

Oh Dear Oh dear.
Looks like the bully Cllrs did not listen to a warning to stop harassing Girnhell residents. :o

Please, please continue!
By the sounds of it a writ has been drawn up and is ready to serve to court.
Go on. Make my millennium.  ;D

Appeal for voices. Your chance to have a say!

A public enquiry has been called by the Secretary of State. In this great democratic country the word “PUBLIC” you would think means for the “PUBLIC”. WMDC who are hosting and paying for the enquiry have so far commented that the public will not be allowed to talk.
After continued pressure by the remaining residents solicitor “PUBLIC” is almost what it should be. Anyone wishing to offer information and talk at the enquiry can now simply turn up on the day. At the start of the enquiry a list of people wishing to talk will be offered to the Secretary of State. At his discretion people will then be allowed to come forward.
The enquiry is set for the 16th & 17th October. The remaining residents need your help. Anyone wishing to help should contact Gareth on 01977 600469.
Please mail to anyone you know who may help and post this request on every social network you can find. Every little will help. ;D

it's an inuiry not a debate
inquiries investigate matters and then report on their findings.

Inquiries summon relevant people for consultation, information and uestioning. What makes a public inquiry 'public' is that their proceedings are observed and that their findings are published. Seems democratic to me.

Absolutely correct, it’s an inquiry. So why not hear all the facts from all concerned?

as a Featherstonian and former coal board estate resident of many years standing I agree: this episode isn't meant to have entertainment value. It's peoples' homes we are talking about. If all this is now almost over then I'm glad it is, but for the sake of the people involved.
The sooner the place, a place that has a fond place in my heart, is flattened and the land put to good use the better.

Drum roll…………………….
After all these years and all the heart ache perhaps WMDC at last are going to offer the only fair deals ever seen on the estate.
Of course, nothing to do with the public inquiry due to start this Tuesday that will allow every fine good and bad detail to become public.
Will the inquiry be called off? The next 24 hours should be fun. ;) ;D

Funny how they don’t want a public enquiry and come up with a fantastic offer now, its not like they’ve anything to hide, I can’t wait until the other ex residents find out what was offered, they may be another enquiry then, after all they were threatened with cpo so took a lot less.

WMDC thought it was all over……it is now.
How lucky were WMDC? Today with just minutes to go before the deadline WMDC finally gave in and agreed to pay the only honest and fair values for property seen in during the long and hard 10 year Girnhell battle.
Nothing to do with a public inquiry set for 10am in the morning where all the juicy stuff would have come to light. The public inquiry has now been cancelled.
Many lessons have been learnt that hopefully other abused estates can possible relate to one day from the information posted here.
From me its good luck and well done to the last residents for all they have had to put up with.
Unless any previous residents wish to fight for the money they lost to a lesser deal the story comes to and end…………?

Glad its all over. Good vid, so many memories of my 11 years living in that estate. I was on Went avenue facing the Nostel fields, fabulous in the summer, mega cold winters. Some good folks for neighbours, its all history now.

Nice video, there was no reason to knock down the brick houses, after all the council gave a grant to brick them, more waste of public money, never mind I’m sure someone gets a nice bonus now its sorted  >:(
