the newly released Featherstone master plan shows the alotments becoming housing. WMDC would have to give 12 months notice before eviction giving enough time to act Wink. the goverment have this to say,

Government policy dictates that Allotments come under the Biodiversity and
Conservation umberella.  This is because in many areas Allotments are
land-locked and are seen as islands or what is known as 'Patches'.  They are
the only areas which are seen to enhance and maintain populations of Fawna
and Flora which need to be preserved for the survival of mankind.  i.e. We
cannot live without beetles.

Under the present circumstances the Scientists are advocating the creation
of 'Green Corridors'.  For over 50 years the insect population has been
overlooked.  One of the main problems which decades of planning has caused
is fragmentation of 'Patches' thereby causing isolated populations which are
too small to survive.  Hence the lack of Butterflies because the populations
which survive are too far apart.

With regard to Wakefield District, Wakefield M.D.C. does not have a
Biodiversity Officer and they would appear to have little understanding of
Biodiversity and Conservation problems.

When filling in any application where green space is involved be mindful
that Wakefield will rob Peter to pay Paul.

One of the main problems with the Olympics Sites are the Allotments which
will be lost.  Because the Biodiversity can never recover once the habitat
has gone.

in english this means that alotments are being counted as green space when considering planning applications. for every home built there has to be so much recreation land. WMDCs plan contradicts its masters.

As for Featherstone we have Roy to thank for finding a lovely loop hole. When the Featherstone urbane council gave all its assets to WMDC it also gave its allotments. This should not have been done. The rent received should have gone to Featherstone town council. Unfortunately this was labour run and they were never going to rock the boat. Now the fault has been found and gone through the many channels it looks now like the allotments will come back under town council control. The big bonus looks likely to be that some back rent will also be given and probably looks enough to produce a major revamp.
At last weeks town council meeting the matter was raised. The independents said yes, labour said no. what do you think?

Thats excellent news gareth, its given us all a bit of hope now, what a lot of people don't realise is, theres a lot of animals on the allotments, and if they could'nt be re -homed, they'd have to be put down, if that happened, wmdc would have blood on their hands, which would'nt be very good publicity for them don't you think Grin Grin

The following letters come from Clive Tennant and Graham Isherwood who both are from Featherstone district but represent other wards as district councilors. Both letters state that there are no plans and never have been to build on the allotments.

WMDC are asking all town and parish councils to adopt allotments in their own areas, take over maintainance and upkeep out off any revinue that they will inherit. Question.... if its worth doing why are they off loading them.

If any allotment land is taken for building on by WMDC then the town council has an obligation if any resident wants an allotment to purchase new land out of its own purse to provide new sites.

hoo bloody ray, whose the winner here then.

The council havn't maintained the allotments for years karen, we can't even get any road planings for the roadway, in other areas the allotments get supplied with leafmould and compost, and the allotments are realy looked after, but wmdc dont give a toss about anything only lining their own pockets, i'd say they were corrupt, but that would make me liable, so i'll just say they're economical with their honesty Angry Wink

If you look around the WMDC district that aint got a town council some of em are quiet tidy, proper boundry fences and gates for key holders to access. exception down at Cutsyke, that looks like a Mandella township but it's being built around by new houses, does anyone remember Lukes Kingdom in the 70s. My point is who gets to upkeep these allotments. From my understanding all the services like water are metered and billed direct to the holding authority. I had an allotment and hardly any water came out of the site tap cos most of the plot owners had spurred of the supply to save carrying a bucket and use sprinklers instead. I used to watch telly with one guy who had run a power supply from the street lamp on the other side of the fence, kettle, light and a small fridge, couldn't get his electric heater to work though. Mind it only all worked when the lamps did which in them days was all day and not at night.
