There is 7 I believe, 5 in the lane and 2 down the sidestreets!
1. Corner of Crossroads out side Fireplace shop. 2. Overlooking the car park & school near the old Kwik Save. 3. Near bus stop outside Farmgate. 4. Back of Library. 5. Outside Lotus Chinese. 6. On the corner just up from Yorkshire Bank. 7. Opposite Last Orders near crossing.
I have had the privilage of visiting the C.C.T.V. control room not long after they were installed when it was in Wakefield (It's moved to Ponte now) and believe me, they can see plenty!
All the camera's rotate 360° and can look straight down the pole on which it's mounted! There isn't a lot they can't see! I know as I have seen it with my own eyes!

They do work believe me, but it all depends on which way they are facing at the time and which way the thieves go!

CCTV can be a good thing. I know some one who got broken into a few months ago and the police got the blokes because the local mini market had cctv cameras around the back of their shop and it court the blokes going in and out of her back garden with all her stuff.

There is a big however! cctc law has been changing in recent years to get around legal issues. In all that time and now the law is described very openly. No enforcement of checking use has been pursued. In plain English for all domestic (looking on to a highway) and light commercial cameras, they should be below bedroom height and with a good reason to use. A sign should be placed in the area to inform people of recording. A log of the footage must be kept. The recording material should be locked away. The person running the equipment should register with the home office under the data protection act. This was free when I applied. One good change in the law is little known. For years I have heard similar story’s from people asking to view footage only to be turned away. I helped campaign for the cameras because I knew the value of the evidence to solve crimes, this response was frustrating. If you are robbed you should have the right to find the crook. The cameras are not perfect but they are bloody good. They do move about regular, but sods law means sometimes you are behind the view. The good bit now is that as the cameras are run by WMDC you can apply for footage to them. If you follow the link below you can apply for footage. http://www.wakefield.gov.uk/cgi-bin/MsmGo.exe?grab_id=0&page_id=29300&query=cctv&SCOPE=www.wakefield.gov.uk&hiword=cctv%20I have had no feedback as yet from this request form. Any information would be appreciated. As for cctv in shops I would personally disagree. Shop lifting is on the up in all manor of disguises from kids with parents to males and prams. That’s not to mention the violence.

I understand what you mean Karen, with all the cameras about it can make you feel like you are being spied on. There are cameras up where the shop I was talking about is, well we thought so until there was an assault there and we were told that they are dummy cameras. Personally I don't mind them and with all the robbery's and Vandalism I can't blame anyone for trying to protect their property.

Unfortunately Karen there isn't always a police car available. I know this from experience, I have had them turn up in five minutes when my windows were smashed and take over half an hour to get there when my 13 year old daughter was attacked by two girls outside our house. They do the best they can, but thanks to cctv at least the people that started it wont get away with it.

Yes they could have walked from the station but only if there was some one in there at the time. I have know there be only 2 or 3 cars covering Wakefield, Featherstone, Pontefract and Knottingley some weekend Karen. I'm sure they sent some one as soon as they could. I have had a lot of dealings with the police in the last few years (may I say not from anything I have done wrong.) I can tell you this a lot of them are frustrated that they are unable to help some people. They do the best they can and I wouldn't do their job for a gold pig.

With regards to the last few posts in crime news about all the things that's happened in Station Lane recently! Isn't anyone at the monitoring station spotting anything suspicious? If nothing was seen in person, surely they must have some footage of some sort?

Good points MrT. The crimes mentioned I do know have been in touch with CCTV after that we will have to wait to hear feedback. Up dates thanks to CCTV are the break-in to Bob In on Station lane. Footage led to an arrest of a person from Sharlston and 8 youths arrested and put on parent programmes for trashing the Christmas light. I am sure there is more to tell perhaps that is also part of the problem, more feedback.

Not all of them have. Have you reported what you know about the damage totaling over £1000 and finally putting a stop to Christmas lights in the precinct for us all for the long term?

CCTV in lane is a good idea but it can't always identify the culprits
