This is the video I took of the fly over on the opening day of the War Memorial. As with any camera, filming whilst zoomed in amplifies camera shake so expect a little! Next time all being well, I will have a tripod  Smiley.

An ironic story, many people still do not realise what a gem we have. Last week while in Tesco, a Featherstone man bought a poppy. He had a Rovers shirt on. The poppy seller could not praise the memorial enough stating “we have the 2nd best memorial in the country”. Its warming to know Featherstone is being talked about positively.

The War memorial opening film has been launched this week.
Personally been looking forward to watching this DVD, and was not disapointed.
It is on sale from shops with posters in the window all over Featherstone or contact the people on the poster.

They flew me 'ome from Kabul with a bullet in me chest.
'Cos they've closed the army 'ospitals, I'm in the NHS.
The nurse, she ain't no Britisher an' so she ain't impressed.
It's like I'm some street corner thug who's come off second best.

Yes, it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "You're not welcome 'ere".
But when Saddam was collar'd, they was quick enough to cheer.
They're proud when Tommy Atkins 'olds the thin red line out there,
But now he's wounded back at 'ome, he has to wait for care.

Some stranger in the next bed sez, "Don't you feel no shame?
You kill my Muslim brothers!" So it's me, not 'im, to blame!
An' then the cleaner ups an' sez "Who are you fightin' for?
It ain't for Queen and country, it's America's bloody war!"

It's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, what's that smell?"
But it's "God go with you, Tommy," when they fly us out to 'ell.
O then we're just like 'eroes from the army's glorious past.
Yes, it's "God go with you, Tommy," when the trip might be your last.

They pays us skivvy wages, never mind we're sitting ducks,
When clerks what's pushing pens at 'ome don't know their flippin' luck.
"Ah, yes" sez they "but think of all the travel to be 'ad."
Pull the other one. Does Cooks do 'olidays in Kabul or Baghdad?

It's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, know your place,"
But it's "Tommy, take the front seat," when there's terrorists to chase.
An' the town is full of maniacs who'd like you dead toot sweet.
Yes, it's "Thank you, Mr Atkins," when they find you in the street.

There's s'pposed to be a covynant to treat us fair an' square
But I 'ad to buy me army boots, an' me combats is threadbare.
An' 'alf the bloody 'elicopters can't get into the air,
An' me rifle jammed when snipers fired. That's why I'm laid up 'ere.

    Yes, it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, "We 'ave to watch the pence";
Bold as brass the P.M. sez, "We spare them no expense."
But I'll tell you when they do us proud an' pull out all the stops,
It's when Tommy lands at Lyneham in a bloomin' wooden box!

So it is very clear today that the Featherstone Labour Party member’s four soldiers are going to continue to complain about the War Memorial Gardens and disrespect our local heroes. So many words could be said. Sad, wish there was a “night at the museum” and some of the heroes would jump out and rattle some living.

“And then there was light”.

Have you driven past the War Memorial Gardens recently about 7.30am/ 8.00am and seen a sweet lady sweeping up?
The volunteers helping to keep the Memorial are just that, volunteers just like some who went to war. So were many of the people who built it. Poignant was the sweet ladies comments of why she is there. “I am overwhelmed by the memorial and ALL it represents. This is my contribution”.

Well said, friend of Featherstone.

I saw her early Saturday morning. Featherstone needs a few more like her. The War Memorial Committee and helpers does Featherstone proud and those who keep knocking them should be ashamed.

I see her every morning on my way to work.  "I can't dig any more" she told me one day, "so I do this".  She is one of the many reasons I love this town.

I also wish to thank the volunteers keeping the beautiful gardens. They are a pleasant addition to drive past at the start and finish of my working day. While driving past recently I could see a man up a ladder measuring. I did not think anything about it until a friend mentioned the man was from Featherstone town council measuring for hanging baskets to be fitted on the memorial apparently without consent. Does anyone know anything about this?

It really is getting sad, but after a number of complaints, when the councils planters are taken away in the next few weeks they will be replaced by someone who has made some for the gardens, then planted up and maintained by the great group of volunteers throughout the year.

I passed the War Memorial yesterday while the gardeners were there planting up the first of the new planters. I drove passed again today and the first two planters look lovely and much more in keeping with the Memorial than the large town council ones. Well done to the loyal band of workers who keep our Memorial and gardens looking so well cared for.

Despite the atrocious weather this morning between 10.45 and 11.15 it was great to see the people who had come to the Armistice Day service especially all the school children, everyone was soaked but still came to pay their respect to our Fallen Heroes.

This might be wrong place to suggest this, for next year is there any possiblities of a marquee being put up nearby...just in case of bad weather.
As we can't rely on the weather a marquee or ask Pete at Top House in case of rain. As all the children did get soaked and most of them spent rest of day at school in wet clothes and PE kits...and it would be a shame tp lose the support of the schools ...just a suggestion

Let’s Work Together…. My arse!

Talking of arse, the pain in the arse Disabled Peoples Partnership member Brendon Power has still been causing expense and trouble. You will love this first of the week’s reports.

As you know Brendon has amongst many other complaints been complaining about anything and everything to do with the Featherstone War memorial Gardens. This week is as below the belt as yet seen.
Brendon’s latest complaint to WMDC is that the War Memorial has illegally tapped in to a street light to obtain power to flood light the memorial and provide 1 x 13 amp socket for the lawn mower in summer.
After checking WMDC found that YEDL had connected to a lamp post for power to the site. A common practice used when low rates of electric are used. WMDC also confirm that the War Memorial committee is paying a fee for this usage out of money they raise. No tax payer’s money is used.

If that were not enough Brendon then went to higher people at Yorkshire electricity and complained. This resulted in YEDL being called to the site to cut off the supply. The following day apparently an outraged WMDC legal team had the power re-connected.
WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF THEY HAD NOT TURNED THE POWER BACK ON?

Brendon. Leave the bloody War Memorial alone.
