Car Key Burglaries
There has been an increase of incidents within the Wakefield Division where
motorists have had their car keys stolen during the course of a house
burglary in order to steal expensive cars parked in the driveway. The
following advice has now been issued:

If you have a garage, please park your car in it. Many people with
garages use them for storage. Clear them out and use them for the
purpose for which they were built. This will keep your cars out of
        the sight of preying eyes.

DO NOT leave car keys in an obvious place, make it as hard as possible
for the thief. At night time consider taking your car keys to bed
        with you.

Consider fitting an electric garage door. This is an added incentive
to use the garage. Many people just cannot be bothered getting out
of their cars, and unlocking the garage, especially in bad weather.

If you have to park your car in the driveway consider fitting
        substantial gates or security posts.

It is a fact that new cars have very sophisticated locks, immobilisers
and other security devices and the only way to start the vehicle is
        to have the key.

Thieves are selecting cars they want to steal from outside houses.
They will look for any opportunity to steal keys that are left
hanging up in the kitchen or hallway or left on the table - and
will actually target them. It is therefore vital that householders
do hide the keys from view.

Householders also need to make sure that they take other simple crime
prevention measures to ensure that they don’t become victims of
sneak-in thieves or burglary, such as remembering not to leave
        doors and windows unlocked.

Doors and Window Security

How important is door and window security?

Very important. In most cases, the offenders who commit burglary are
opportunists. They see an open door or window and they take their chance.
Believe it or not but nearly half of all burglaries are committed through
an open door or window. A third of burglaries occur through a rear window.
An open window or door is therefore an open invitation to enter your home.
No other aspect of crime prevention is more effective than improving your
door and window security. Keep them closed and locked especially when you
are not in that room.

Police Reminder To Check For ID

Monday, 21 March, 2011

Police are reminding residents to check for identification when officials
visit homes in the region as part of the forthcoming 2011 Census process.

The actual Census day is Sunday 27th March, however, the field operation
will run from March to mid-August and census field staff will be taking to
the streets to offer assistance and collect questionnaires from residential
households and communal establishments across West Yorkshire. Every
household in West Yorkshire will have to complete a census form.

Members of the public should remember that:

Residents who return their completed questionnaires promptly (before 6th
April) will not be contacted by the census field staff
All census staff will carry an ID card with photo, logo and hologram and
should automatically show their ID and explain who they are They may ask
for name and number of residents, but they will not ask for specific
details (like credit card details, bank accounts etc)
Census staff should never enter the household unless they are invited
and they may also need to make several visits to the same address to
   ensure a questionnaire is returned.
Residents will not be asked to leave their questionnaire on the doorstep
   for collection
Residents can request a pre-arranged appointment with a collector via
   the census helpline number – 0300 0201 101
Additional information/assistance can also be found on the census
   website www.census.gov.uk

For people who live in communal establishments such as care homes, hotels,
and halls of residence will have their questionnaires hand delivered as
well as Gypsy and Traveller sites, caravans parks and marinas. A dedicated
member of the Census staff will speak with the manager of the complex and
agree a date and time to pick-up completed questionnaires. They will not
necessarily speak with residents.

West Yorkshire Police are encouraging residents to be alert when dealing
with callers at the door.

Chris Joyce, Force Crime Reduction Officer said: "It is a sad fact of life
that some people will impersonate others to commit a criminal offence, so
it is extremely important that members of the public remember to satisfy
themselves that callers at their home are genuine and who they say they
are.

"Most callers at your door will be genuine, but it is vital that you
thoroughly check their identity before giving them any personal details of
allowing them access to your property’

"The Census Team has ensured that their staff follows good practice when
calling at residential properties. However, if you are in any doubt
whatsoever about the identity of anyone who calls at your home, do not let
them in, turn them away and then alert the Police if you are suspicious of
their intentions."

Anyone who would like additional information about the 2011 Census process
should ring the Census Helpline on 0300 0201 101 or visit www.census.gov.uk

Sadly the cut backs have said goodbye to the person responsible for the regular local crime reports.
Apparently they will continue but as you can see from the dates bigger and bigger gaps are appearing between dates.

For the moment it looks down to the locals. Perhaps an un-locked topic requires opening?

Allotment thefts
For the last 2 Saturday nights and more Green Lane allotments have been broken in to. The thieves appear to break in a day or two before and then go back and steel to order. Barb wire rolls and live stock have been taken.
There have been sightings of suspects that appear connected. Three young males in silver Saxo have been seen more than once near by. The same three also have a van that has a distinctive roof rack that over hangs the back of the vehicle. Apparently the van is used for big items stolen. The Saxo and van are known to be livening in Knottingly. Another young male on a bmx is also associated and carry’s a tool bag, gloves and mask. All appear to be associated with Streethouse and Mount Pleasant Street.
If you see these vehicles please try and get a registration number.

A well spoken white male aged 45/55 was in Featherstone today possibly as a scam to pass off dodgy £10 notes. Boy are they bad. They are under the size of a normal note and look a bad photo copy. There are no water marks. The silver line look painted on and the paper is poor. The note looks on a slant. Check your teners.

Looks like a couple of crime waves have begun in Featherstone.
1. Looks like a team of 3 well known local men aged over 40 have decided to go on a shed and garden theft spree. For the last 2 weeks at least 3 sheds and gardens per night that are known to have been robbed. Motor bike, pedal bikes and power tools are the main items being targeted. It does not matter if your garden is hard to get to, these guys are keen. It would appear they are doing their homework and looking for expensive items. Get safe and lock up.
The 3 males are using a pick up to transport the goods. It appears they have a contact in Pontefract who is willing to buy/ swap/ trade. They also appear to be using 3 addresses, Farm Road, Lea Lane and Girnhill lane. Last night several victims arrived at farm road looking for their goods. Don’t know if they got their bikes hidden upstairs in one of the houses being questioned by them. Looks like this is set to last until a long prison term is enforced or the wrong victim is upset.
2. The supermarkets and some shops are being blatantly hit by thieves. Again old addicts appear to have decided to have absolutely no disregard by walking in and taking arm full’s of products which they then take to several address’s we all know.
There would have all ready been arrests made if better communications were in place. Roll Eyes
