Please be aware of the following and my advice would be to inform
Trading Standards if you receive a call from this company.

There have been a number of residents in the area who have complained about
a Security System Company, who are cold calling people.

The company is phoning people up telling them that they are entitled to a
free security system and are asked to confirm their details. They are a
legitimate company who are using excessive pressure to get people to sign
up to products without mentioning hidden installation costs etc to people.
They make false statements pretending to be working alongside the Home
Office & Police in joint operations to reduce crime in hot spot areas.

There have been many complaints across the country, with a number of Police
forces, Money Saving Expert and Trading Standards involved.

A resident from this area has recently fallen victim to an email     |
                             'phishing' scam.

The resident received emails purporting to be from the security teams of
HSBC and Barclays Bank. The email stated that there had been an attempted
breach of his online bank accounts and as a result, he should follow a
link and enter his details so that security could be reset. The scammers
then obtain all bank account details and use these for fraudulent
                          internet purchases etc.

Banks would NOT contact customers in this manner and as such, all emails
of this sort should be deleted.

Bogus caller warning

Friday 22nd January 2010

BOGUS CALLER WARNING

Residents across Wakefield District are being warned to be on the look out
for bogus callers and dodgy sales tactics.

Detectives are keen that residents check the identity of anyone who knocks
on their door claiming to be from a utilities company or any other official
and to be wary of those who call without a prior appointment.

"Never feel pressured,” said Detective Sergeant Sue Buxton of Wakefield
District Division. “You are under no obligation to let representatives into
your home on an unannounced visit. It is not rude or unfriendly to say no.”

“Elderly and vulnerable people are often the target of sneak-in and bogus
burglars as well as those who use high pressure sales tactics. If someone
turns up at your doorstep unannounced and offers to do you some repairs or
sell you something then be cautious.”

“Residents should not let strangers into their house, especially if their
visit has not been pre-arranged. If you are in any doubt you should get
assistance from a neighbour or relative, or ask to see their identification
card and contact the company they claim to work for. Don’t call the number
on the identification card itself - it may be fake – look the number up in
the phone directory instead.”

"If you are in any further doubt, contact West Yorkshire Police on 0845
6060606."

Advice offered to residents to beat bogus callers includes:
Ensure windows and doors are locked.
Leave lights on when out of your home during an evening.
Do not allow strangers into your property.
Representatives from utility companies or your housing association will
carry identification and may use a 'password' system. Contact a neighbour
or relative if you wish to check their details.
Use the chain on your door, and if in any doubt, do not let them in.
Be extra cautious of callers who say they need your help urgently perhaps
telling you that there is a problem with a gas pipe or water main or other
such utility.
Be wary of callers who ask you to step outside, want to use your toilet or
ask for a glass of water or to make a phone call.

Further crime prevention advice is available from your local police
station, or from the West Yorkshire Police website
www.westyorkshire.police.uk.
